I know it’s the spooky season, but I’m so happy to see some light fun books by some of my favorite authors, along with some mysteries. Plus, Christmas books are coming!

Ingrid Dahl, a cheerful twenty-nine-year-old librarian in the cozy mountain town of Ridgetop, North Carolina, has been happily dating her college boyfriend, Cory, for eleven years without ever discussing marriage. But when Ingridโs sister announces her engagement to a woman sheโs only been dating for two years, Ingrid and Cory feel pressured to consider their future. Neither has ever been with anybody else, so they make an unconventional decision. They’ll take a one-month break to date other people, then they’ll reunite and move toward marriage. Ingrid even has someone in mind: her charmingly grumpy coworker, Macon Nowakowski, on whom sheโs secretly crushed for years. But plans go awry, and when the month ends, Ingrid and Cory realize theyโre not ready to resume their relationshipโ and Ingridโs harmless crush on Macon has turned into something much more complicated.
I’m always up for a romance that has a librarian.

Ex-cop Woody Barker lives on a houseboat (theย Ship Happens) off the Gulf Coast and spends his days bickering/flirting with his ex-wife and attending doctor appointments about his malfunctioning ticker. He’s already survived several heart attacks and is debating the merits of quitting smoking so he can get on the organ donor waitlist. But he gets the surprise of a lifetime when an old girlfriend reveals on her deathbed that Woody has a seventeen-year-old daughter he never knew Caroline.
Caroline is pregnant and trapped in an endless loop of bad choices. Her good-for-nothing boyfriend, “Tater,” is the only “reliable” person in her life. But when her estranged dying mother begs her to go back to her singlewide trailer to dig up the bathroom vanity subfloor to “get something that needs to be gone yesterday,” Caroline finds herself at the center of a very dangerous plot that–if she survives–has the potential to turn her world upside down in a positive and seismic way.
While Woody and Caroline don’t know or trust each other yet, they instinctively know they can’t (and don’t want to) go through the world alone any longer.
This is a new to me author, but sounds like a more literary leaning story that I’ve been wanting to read more.

โThe story of my life is the story of my stories,โ writes Susan Orlean in this extraordinary, era-defining memoir from one of the greatest practitioners of narrative nonfiction of our time. Joyride is a magic carpet ride through Orleanโs life and career, where every day is an opportunity for discovery and every moment holds the potential for wonder. Throughout her storied career, her curiosity draws her to explore the most ordinary and extraordinary of places, from going deep inside the head of a regular ten-year-old boy for a legendary profile (โThe American Man Age Tenโ) to reporting on a woman who owns twenty-seven tigers, from capturing the routine magic of Saturday night to climbing Mt. Fuji.
Not only does Orleanโs account of a writing life offer a trove of indispensable gleanings for writers, itโs also an essential and practical guide to embracing any creative path. She takes us through her process of dreaming up ideas, managing deadlines, connecting with sources, chasing every possible lead, confronting writerโs block and self-doubt, and crafting the perfect ledeโa Susan specialty.
While Orlean has always written her way into other peopleโs lives in order to understand the human experience, Joyride is her most personal book everโa searching journey through finding her feet as a journalist, recovering from the excruciating collapse of her first marriage, falling head-over-heels in love again, becoming a mother while mourning the decline of her own mother, sojourning to Hollywood for films based on her work including Adaptation and Blue Crush, and confronting mortality. Joyride is also a time machine to a bygone era of journalism, from Orleanโs bright start in the golden age of alt-weeklies to her career-making days working alongside icons such as Robert Gottlieb, Tina Brown, David Remnick, Anna Wintour, Sonny Mehta, and Jonathan Karpโforces who shaped the media industry as we know it today.
I really enjoyed The Library Book and would love to learn more about Orlean’s history.

Goodreads Description:
In a dying town, Ro Crowley waits for her son on the evening of his 21st birthday.
But Sam never comes home. His footprints in the dust of three abandoned houses offer the only clue to his final movements. One set in. One set out.
Five long years later, Ro returns to Carralon Ridge for the annual memorial of Sam’s disappearance. The skeletal community is now an echo of itself, having fractured under the pressure of the coal mine operating on its outskirts.
But Ro still wants answers. Only a few people remain. If the truth is to be found in that town, does it lie among them?
Jane Harper has great mysteries that also have great character development. Plus I love the Australian settings.

Goodreads Description:

Almost as soon as Mirren and Theo arrive at the castle, a deep snow blankets the Highlands, cutting off the outside world. Mirren knows that Jamieโs grandfather, the castleโs most recent laird, had been a book collector, a hoarder, and a great lover of treasure hunts. Jenny Colgan is always a favorite, now we’re combining the holidays and rare books, sounds amazing!

Debbie Macomber’s holiday books are like a warm hug.

I love a Cinderella retelling and loved The Celestial Kingdom books. I know I had this on my September list too, based on the Goodreads dates, I assume this is because of different editions, but I think it’s worth listing twice.
