Top Five Wednesday 9/8/22

September 7th: Never Judge a Book by Its Cover

We’ve all seen those covers where we might cringe or think it’s not “our thing,” but we pick it up anyway because the blurb sounded cool. Sometimes to our surprise, those reads become some of our new favorites! What are some books you’ve picked up and thought you wouldn’t like because of the cover but loved the story?

I do like a beautiful cover, so I mostly looked at books that were plain.

This unassuming cover is filled with powerful poems.

This was a great WWII mystery. The sepia cover just didn’t pop for me, I like color.

This simple cover reminded me of a century old schoolbook. But the true story of the Los Angelos Public Fire was fascinating.

Another simple cover hiding a true story of emotional depth.

This cover doesn’t look like it goes with a fun bakery-themed cozy with paranormal elements.

August 31st: Skilled Fighters

There are characters we know can hold their own and kick some butt, but then there are characters who are simply deadly in their skillset and seem almost undefeatable. For today’s prompt, let’s focus on characters who we consider skilled fighters and do more than just “hold their ground.”

This was one of the more difficult prompts for me. I could think of a lot of books with fight scenes, but in a lot of the books I read it’s more a matter of luck, magic or teamwork that results in victory. There is magic involved with most of these worlds, but all of these examples are highly skilled. Even though I listed them as 1-5 that’s not necessarily their rank. It was hard to compare skills, so I just went with the order I thought of them.

1

The Lords of the Underworld from the Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter

This might be cheating, but I couldn’t decide on just one since they are all highly skilled with their own unique expertise (aka demons)

2

Valek from the Study series by Maria V. Snyder

The chief of security for Ixia could take out a dozen men without breaking a sweat, but his ability to analyze his opponents and determine their next move may be his greatest skill.

3

Four from the Divergent series by Veronica Roth

He’s called Four for a reason. Not only is he highly skilled, he has few fears.

4

Katsa from Graceling

Katsa is “graced” with the skill of killing. At age eight she was able to kill a man with her bare hands.

5

Sybella from Dark Triumph from the His Fair Assassin Series

Any of the assassins in this series are highly skilled, but Sybella is my favorite.

August 24th: New Beginnings

School is about to be back in session for many, and with it, new beginnings! Whether it’s the start of a new grade or a new adventure in a fantasy world, let’s share about stories with the theme of new beginnings! (This could even be a second chance at new beginnings too!)

Goodreads synopsis:

An unforgettable story of resilience and resistance set during WWII and present-day France on a secluded island off the coast of Brittany

Natalie Morgen made a name for herself with a memoir about overcoming her harsh childhood after finding a new life in Paris. After falling in love with a classically trained chef, they moved together to his ancestral home, a tiny fishing village off the coast of Brittany.

But then Francois-Xavier breaks things off with her without warning, leaving her flat broke and in the middle of renovating the guesthouse they planned to open for business. Natalie’s already struggling when her sister, Alex, shows up unannounced. The sisters form an unlikely partnership to save the guesthouse, reluctantly admitting their secrets to each other as they begin to heal the scars of their shared past.

But the property harbors hidden stories of its own. During World War II, every man of fighting age on the island fled to England to join the Free French forces. The women and children were left on their own…until three hundred German troops took up residence, living side-by-side with the French women on the tiny island for the next several years.

When Natalie and Alex unearth an old cookbook in a hidden cupboard, they find handwritten recipes that reveal old secrets. With the help of locals, the Morgen sisters begin to unravel the relationship between Violette, a young islander whose family ran the guesthouse during WWII, and Rainier, a German military customs official with a devastating secret of his own.

August 17th: Used Books

Today is National Thrift Shop Day! While it’s always an amazing feeling to get a brand-new book, there can be many hidden and older gems to be discovered at thrift stores. In honor of this holiday, what are some used books you have found either online or at thrift shops that you were grateful you purchased? Could be a book you had been looking for or maybe one you decided to take a chance on!

The majority of books I get are used books because I am active on the paperbackswap website. There are so many books I wouldn’t have known about without that site. These are five that I really enjoyed.

Fiona Finnegan faces many tragedies in her young life, but never gives up on her dream of owning her own tea shop.

Fascinating nonfiction book for any book lover.

This is book one in the Shetland Island mystery series. The mystery has a lot of layers to it and I love the Scottish setting.

A close look at the complicated family dynamics in an Irish Catholic family.

This was a very unique fantasy book. Although I read a lot of fantasy, this was different from my usual picks.

August 10th: Bookish Happiness

For every reader, books are so much more than just words on a page, but instead are words that help make our lives better and spark happiness from the very characters we read about. Since August is recognized as Happiness Happens month and yesterday was National Book Lovers Day, for today’s prompt let’s talk about books that make us happy and bring joy to our hearts!

I’m not a big re-reader, but Pride and Prejudice is my comfort read. Elizabeth and Darcy’s happy ending will always put a smile on my face.

This book shows up in a lot of my lists. It was my first introduction to Jenny Colgan, and all her books make me happy.

This is the first book in a fun series about a family that owns a bait shop/funeral home. A premise like that has to make you smile.

I just finished this book about three hours ago, and I’m still happy. Even though there are some sad parts, I finished if feeling so good about the power of libraries.

This is another one that comes up on a lot of my lists. It’s such a funny book. My Favorite Read for December 2021

More and more in fiction, we are seeing a stronger emphasis on female characters who are no damsels-in-distress. They take charge of situations and step in to do what needs to be done, regardless if it’s their duty or the heroes. Who are some of your favorite strong female characters in fiction that you have read about?

Katsa from Graceling. I love that even when she falls for Prince Poe, Katsa still stays true to herself and doesn’t alter her mission.

Deka from Gilded. Deka’s strength evolved throughout the story, as she initially believes the lies the women in her world have been fed. When she learns the truth, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Hermione Granger. Most of my picks are more physically strong, but Hermione shows the power of intellect.

Sybella from Dark Triumph (His Fair Assasin, book 2). While Beast tries to save her, Sybella is no damsel in distress and is rescued kicking and screaming.

Cinder from the Lunar Chronicles. Forget the traditional Cinderella, Cinder is modern cyborg fighting and intergalactic battle.

Top 5 Wednesday- 7/20/22

Top Five Wednesday is a goodreads group that responds to weekly prompts. This weeks topic: Characters you want as a sibling

  1. Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen: Lizzy is completely dedicated to Jane and will protect any of her sisters if they are in need.
  2. Katniss Everdeen from Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: Everyone should have a sibling who is willing to volunteer as tribute for them.
  3. Moose Flanagan from The Alcatraz Tales series by Gennifer Choldenko: Moose is so patient and understanding with Natalie. When he does lose his temper it’s because he’s trying to protect her.
  4. The Bridgerton siblings from the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn- They might get into each other’s business, but it would be fun to part of this big, loving family
  5. Isabel Johansen from the Bella Vista Chronicles by Susan Wiggs- If I ever find out I have a long lost half-sister, I hope she’s as kind and Isabel.

Top Five Wednesday- 7/13/22: Cliffhangers

Top 5 Wednesday is a Goodreads group that responds to weekly prompts about books. This weeks topic is cliffhangers.

Like most readers I have a love/hate relationship with readers. They keep you wanted to read but can be very frustrating when you have to wait for the publication of the next book. I’m not a person who buys an entire book series until before reading the first. I don’t want to commit until I know I like the series. This can lead to frustrating cliffhangers. I started writing notes on the cliffhangers for these books, but it created spoilers. So, I took them out. These were the endings that made me frustrated and wanting to read more.

Top Five Wednesday- Must have on Vacation

Top 5 Wednesday is a goodreads group that responds to weekly prompts about books. This week’s prompt is “Must Have on Vacation”. When I’m on vacation I love light, romances.

Shipped

This is a perfect vacation romance. Henley and Graeme are work rivals competing for a promotion doing publicity for a cruise line. To win the job, they are sent on a cruise to the Galapagos Islands. Once they get to know each other, they discover there’s more between them than angry emails.

My (not so) Perfect Life

This book has some of the funniest scenes I’ve ever read. But, it also has a good message about how we misrepresent our lives on social media.

Dial A for Aunties

When Meddy accidentally kills her blind date, her aunties jump in to save the day. This is a fun, outrageous story.

One Reckless Summer

Destiny is one of my favorite “book romance” destinations. This first installment in the series is my favorite.

Love Struck

This is a fun second-chance romance set on a tropical island. Ruby and Will were best friends until he broke her heart. Now they’re reunited for their friends’ wedding on a tropical island.
